The apology was contained in a statement issued on behalf of the NFF Executive Committee, with NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau expressing regret over the team’s disappointing result.
“We recognise the disappointment this result has caused millions of Nigerians who passionately support and identify with the Super Falcons,” Gusau said.
He acknowledged that the team entered the tournament carrying the expectations of Nigerians as well as the strong backing of the Federal Government, but failed to produce the result expected at this stage.
The federation also issued a special apology to President Tinubu, acknowledging his support for Nigerian sports, particularly women’s football.
The NFF recalled the substantial rewards, national honours, houses and reception given to the Super Falcons after their previous WAFCON triumph, as well as the President’s continued support for the Super Eagles.
“It is therefore with genuine humility and regret that we acknowledge that we have not been able to repay that confidence with the outcome expected at this stage of the competition. We sincerely apologise to Mr. President and deeply appreciate his continued interest, encouragement and investment in Nigerian football,” the statement said.
The federation also extended its apology to the National Assembly, National Sports Commission, sponsors, stakeholders and millions of Nigerian supporters at home and abroad.
Despite missing out on automatic qualification, Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2027 Women’s World Cup remain alive through the African play-off route.
